Orthodontics for Children
When is Too Early?
One of the most frequent questions we are asked is ... "when is the best time to begin orthodontics?"
Developmental changes during the early growth years are frequent. Professional Orthodontists recommend that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7.
By the age of 7 the first adult molars erupt which establishes the back bite. During this time Dr. Rizkallah evaluates front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships.
For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smiles.
Timely screening and interceptive treatment (if needed) assures successful management of potential bite problems (malocclusion) thereby promoting the development of normal dental function... and a great looking smile.
Interceptive Treatment
Some of Dr. Rizkallah's uses of interceptive treatments address a variety of potential needs:
- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving space for unerupted teeth
- Reducing the need for tooth removal
- Reducing treatment time with braces
Dr. Rizkallah maintains a watchful eye on developmental miiestones to assure that malocclusion issues are addressed. Untreated, malocclusion problems can inevitably lead to more serious problems including uneven teeth wear and chipping, overcrowded teeth and gum disease, tongue thrusting and serious speech impediments.
